Letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio About NYC School Closings
March 14, 2020
The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo
Governor of New York State
New York State Capitol Building
Albany, NY 12224
The Honorable Bill de Blasio
Mayor of the City of New York
City Hall
New York, NY 10007
Dear Governor Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio:
We are the Executive Boards of the parents’ associations of Stuyvesant High School, The Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Technical High School, Booker T. Washington Middle School and Christa McAuliffe Intermediate School. We join the many families from each of our schools and the 64 Stuyvesant High School teachers who have called on you to close New York City schools. While we share many of the concerns that have supported the decision to keep schools open to date, we do not believe that continuing that decision is consistent with the drastic measures taken and accepted by our global, national and local communities as necessary to confront this pandemic. New York City can and must find another way to support the families that will be affected by school closures. Students and families should not need to decide between going to school and staying healthy.
We write as Executive Boards and not on behalf of our entire parents’ associations, but we represent an overwhelming majority of concerned families from each of our schools who know that this is a decision that must be made now.
Sincerely,
Executive Board of Brooklyn Technical High School Parent Association
Executive Board of Christa McAuliffe Intermediate School PTO Inc.
Executive Board of MS54 Booker T. Washington Parent Teacher Association
Executive Board of Stuyvesant High School Parents’ Association
Executive Board of The Bronx High School of Science Parents’ Association
